Obesity remains a major health challenge in both Oklahoma and Nebraska, affecting thousands of adults and children across both states. While recent data shows some improvement, rates of excess weight are still high and have serious implications for physical and mental health.

Obesity Trends in Oklahoma

Oklahoma recently saw progress in reducing obesity, but rates remain significantly above national averages. According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, Oklahoma’s adult obesity rate decreased from 38.7 percent to 36.8 percent between 2023 and 2024. Childhood obesity (ages 6–17) also fell from 21.4 percent to 16.9 percent during the same period. Oklahoma’s rank among states by obesity prevalence improved, moving from 48th in 2022 to 36th in 2024.

Obesity in Nebraska

In Nebraska, obesity remains a significant issue as well. Recent public health data indicates that roughly 37 percent of Nebraska adults are living with obesity. Obesity rates have been projected to increase if trends continue, and nearly 28.7 percent of children ages 10–17 are reported to be overweight or obese.

Across the United States including Oklahoma and Nebraska obesity is part of a complex public health epidemic that contributes to increased risk for conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and certain cancers.

Childhood Obesity Is a Growing Concern

Both states face challenges with youth overweight and obesity. Nationally, data shows that nearly 1 in 5 children and adolescents ages 2–19 are classified as obese, with even higher risk observed in certain age groups.  In Nebraska, state health assessments report that more than 31 percent of children are either overweight or obese.

The Physical Health Consequences

Obesity is linked to chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and metabolic syndrome. Excess body weight increases the risk of many preventable health conditions that diminish quality of life and lead to higher healthcare costs for individuals, families, and communities. Regular physical activity and healthy eating are foundational strategies for weight management and long-term health.

Why Fitness Is Critical for Mental Health

Physical activity benefits far more than body weight alone. According to the CDC, regular physical activity can reduce the risk of depression and anxiety, improve sleep, and enhance cognitive functions like thinking and judgment. Even short bursts of moderate-intensity activity can boost mood and reduce short-term anxiety.

Exercise triggers the release of “feel-good” neurotransmitters such as endorphins and serotonin, which can improve mood and emotional well-being. It can also reduce stress hormones like cortisol and enhance self-esteem, which plays a key role in mental resilience.

Additionally, physical activity supports children’s brain development, memory, and classroom behavior, which can positively impact academic performance and emotional regulation as they grow.

Holistic Health Is About Body and Mind

Addressing obesity cannot be limited to weight alone. A holistic approach considers both physical and mental health, recognizing that stress, depression, anxiety, and sleep issues often accompany excess weight and can hinder healthy lifestyle changes.
