Oklahoma is experiencing a severe shortage of qualified mental health professionals. All 77 counties in the state are officially designated as mental health professional shortage areas.

Demand for counseling has risen sharply, yet the available workforce has not kept up, leaving thousands of Oklahomans without timely access to care.

The numbers tell the story. Oklahoma currently has about 13.1 psychiatric prescribers per 100,000 residents, far below the recommended 35.7 per 100,000 needed to meet the state's needs. When it comes to psychologists, Oklahoma is meeting only about one third of the estimated demand. Rural counties feel this shortage the most, with many areas having little to no access at all.

These gaps have real consequences. More than 56 percent of Oklahomans who needed mental health treatment in 2022 did not receive it. For children, the situation is just as urgent. Oklahoma has only one school psychologist for every 3,301 students, far from the recommended ratio of 1 to 500. School counselor availability is also short, with one counselor serving an average of 421 students instead of the recommended 1 to 250. As a result, many children facing depression, anxiety, or emotional struggles receive no support at all.

We created Joy Therapy because the need for accessible emotional support in Oklahoma has never been greater. With long wait times, limited availability, and shortages across every county, many people simply cannot get help when they need it most.

Joy Therapy was designed to bridge that gap. Our mission is to provide compassionate, uplifting, and timely support for individuals who are stuck on waiting lists or who lack access to traditional counseling options. We offer guidance, tools, and emotional care during the moments when people need someone in their corner the most.

Oklahoma will need significant workforce expansion to meet the state’s mental health needs in the coming years. Until that growth happens, resources like Joy Therapy play an important role. We are committed to offering comfort, clarity, and real support to those who cannot afford to wait for help.

If you or a loved one is in need of care call Joy today.
